A Hawaiian conch shell, pu, is a large seashell played much like a trumpet. Depending on the blowing style the sound emitted can travel a couple of miles. Historically, the sound of the pu would sometimes accompany chants or announce the beginning of a ceremony. Today, the sound of the pu can often be heard at the start of special events, such as hula festivals and luaus, and to honor royalty or famous people.
